P. Allen Smith and Associates (PAS&A) was formed in 2004 by landscape design expert P. Allen Smith. After studying garden history and design at the University of Manchester in England through an International Rotary Scholarship, Smith became a Certified Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society. P. Allen Smith returned home to the United States to begin his career as a landscape designer, creating landscapes and gardens across the country.
P. Allen Smith & Associates is the design side of P. Allen Smith’s media company, Hortus, Ltd. Before Allen began producing gardening media, he was a successful independent garden center owner and nationally known garden designer with a multi-generational background in the nursery industry. At the same time that his television and book career took off, he expanded the design company in order to practice his craft and continue his hands-on learning. PAS&A combines the diverse backgrounds of the design team to create spaces that inspire and intrigue while working in concert with nature.
Intertwining the home and garden has always been a driving force in P. Allen Smith’s design work and teaching. Whether it is a garden room, a porch space, or an interior, his taste and style result in a unique and beautiful environment that exceeds client aspirations. Both his gardens and the interiors of his homes have been featured in national media and firmly establish his role as a leading tastemaker.
PAS&A’s scope of work encompasses all sizes, from small residential garden and interior spaces to large estates, institutional campus projects, and botanical gardens. Our services range from horticultural consultation to design-build and everything in between and our clients are spread from coast to coast. The common thread throughout all of these projects is a site appropriate response to clients’ wishes and desires that gains its identity from the culture and place the space inhabits. One of the best plantsmen of this generation, Allen also has passions for art, history, and architecture that bring a unique perspective and richness to his projects.
Since founding his firm nearly 30 years ago, P. Allen Smith has designed an extensive range of projects throughout the country. With a passion for American style, and long respected for his intelligent integration of architecture and garden, Allen’s design work has expanded to include rural properties and the development of a classic American aesthetic. His portfolio includes everything from elegant residential gardens, family estates, and a highly exclusive private golf club, to serene weekend retreats, horse farms and a quail plantation.
Inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s interest in the ferme ornée concept for Monticello, Allen created his own Moss Mountain Farm as a demonstration ground for principles of good design, conservation and stewardship. Cited by the New York Times as a 'stunning estate' set high above the Arkansas River valley, Moss Mountain is a full expression of Allen’s design philosophy: grounded in historic precedent, inspired by regional influences, and guided by modern day application. A collector of early 19th century American furniture, Allen is also known for interiors that feature a keen selection of materials and a refined sense of color. He is an avid artist and often uses painting as a medium to express his designs.
In 2009, Allen founded the Heritage Poultry Conservancy, an organization dedicated to the preservation and support of all threatened breeds and strains of domestic poultry. A poultry enthusiast since the childhood he spent raising chickens, Allen is now working to create awareness and rebuild the bloodlines of various breeds, many of which were brought to America by early settlers. Allen wrote the bestselling book, P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home, now considered a classic garden design reference, as the first in his series of six gardening books published by Clarkson Potter between 2003 and 2010. His latest book, P. Allen Smith’s Seasonal Recipes from the Garden, was released in December 2010 and continues to win accolades for the ‘snappy Southern flavors’ and ‘the light, reassuring touch that his fans adore.’
With 20 years of media experience, Allen helped YouTube launch their home and garden channel, started publishing his own digital magazine, Garden Home Style, and rolled out his own radio program, which features interviews with experts on everything from locally grown food to historic preservation. His media company, Hortus Inc., has won several coveted Taste Awards for the nationally syndicated television shows, Garden Home and Garden to Table. Learn more at pallensmith.com.
