P. Allen Smith
Founder and Principal Designer
Since founding his firm nearly 30 years ago, P. Allen Smith has designed an extensive range of projects throughout the country. With a passion for American style, and long respected for his intelligent integration of architecture and garden, Allen’s design work has expanded to include rural properties and the development of a classic American aesthetic. His portfolio includes everything from elegant residential gardens, family estates, and a highly exclusive private golf club, to serene weekend retreats, horse farms and a quail plantation.
Inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s interest in the ferme ornée concept for Monticello, Allen created his own Moss Mountain Farm as a demonstration ground for principles of good design, conservation and stewardship. Cited by the New York Times as a 'stunning estate' set high above the Arkansas River valley, Moss Mountain is a full expression of Allen’s design philosophy: grounded in historic precedent, inspired by regional influences, and guided by modern day application. A collector of early 19th century American furniture, Allen is also known for interiors that feature a keen selection of materials and a refined sense of color. He is an avid artist and often uses painting as a medium to express his designs.
In 2009 Allen founded the Heritage Poultry Conservancy, an organization dedicated to the preservation and support of all threatened breeds and strains of domestic poultry. A poultry enthusiast since the childhood he spent raising chickens, Allen is now working to create awareness and rebuild the bloodlines of various breeds, many of which were brought to America by early settlers. heritagepoultry.org
Allen wrote the bestselling P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home, now considered a classic garden design reference, as the first in his series of 6 gardening books published by Clarkson Potter between 2003 and 2010. His latest book, P. Allen Smith’s Seasonal Recipes from the Garden was released in December 2010, and continues to win accolades for the ‘snappy Southern flavors’ and ‘the light, reassuring touch that his fans adore.’
With 20 years of media experience, Allen recently helped YouTube launch their home and garden channel, started publishing his own digital magazine, Garden Home Style, and rolled out his own radio program, which features interviews with experts on everything from locally grown food to historic preservation. His holiday greenery collection is now sold in stores across the country each year. This year his media company, Hortus Inc., won several coveted Taste Awards for the nationally syndicated television shows Garden Home and Garden to Table. Learn more at pallensmith.com
